To experience all Southeast Alaska has to offer embark on one of NorthernSpell’s optional excursions. Keep in mind, like the raven and the wolf, as humans we too are creatures on this earth and subject to the whims of Mother Nature. The wind, weather and tides are all important considerations when planning adventures in the wilds of Alaska!
During the summer months a variety of marine birds and mammals call Southeast Alaska home. On a boat tour humpback whales, seals, sea lions, sea otter, orca, porpoises, auks, murres, puffins and more may be sited. All against the incredible backdrop of Southeast Alaska.
Canoe Point Falls, accessible only by boat, is one of the many natural wonders of our area. Plummeting over 130 feet, the falls are nothing short of breathtaking. While you take the easy hike to the falls to explore, view and photograph, your guide will be busy preparing your waterside picnic barbecue. This trip has been very popular with guests with many wanting to return.
Roll up your sleeves and grab a shovel and bucket or put on your rain gear and prepare to help haul the pots. Crabbing and Clamming are a way of life in Alaska and we’ll show you what it’s all about. You never know what you might see, octopus, giant starfish and other creatures, and hopefully, a pile of tasty clams and crabs we can prepare fresh for you that day!
Conditions permitting, Prince of Wales Island offers some fun freshwater fishing possibilities. Whether it’s Dolly Varden, Rainbow and Cutthroat Trout or Pink and Silver Salmon, it’s not just fishing but a chance to see the flora and fauna that make up the island interior.
Visit the historic cemetery on one of the nearby islands, with antiquated markers dating back to the 18th century. Visit the local Totem Park to feel the native spirit and see the newest totems added in 2011.
Climb the Sunnahae Mountain Trail, at the end you’ll be rewarded with views of the ocean and surrounding islands like you’ve never seen. Head to the north side of the island to explore the depths of El Capitan Caves, with over 2 miles of passage El Cap is the largest mapped cave in Alaska.
Take a Kayak tour of Big Salt Lake where you may see seals, cranes, loons, deer, bear and more. The possibilities are endless and at NorthernSpell we’ll due everything we can to help you experience the essence of Alaska!
