“Magnificent Setting”

We were met at the Klawock airport as planned and drove to the dock where we boarded Sam Peter’s boat Tyee for the 5 minute ride to the NorthernSpell dock.  Walking up the dock’s walkway to the lodge you’re greeted by (name of dog) and a view of the entrance to the lodge. (Name of Dog) guides you indoors and WOW…. It is amazing; so much to look and marvel at, but for me the 55lb Salmon on the wall wins my vote!

My two boys and I had the pleasure of being NorthernSpell’s first fishermen staying at the lodge for 7 days.  The setting is magnificent and the buildings harmonize with the trees surrounding the lodge and chalets.  The wooden A framed chalets are clean, warm, comfortable with hot showers and a small kitchen.  It’s truly a home away from home to relax in after a full days fishing.  The chalets even have a porch on which you can put your feet up, enjoy the evening with a drink and a chat about the day’s success!

The food was good and plentiful; the cook asked for our meal preferences and then provided them.  Breakfast was ready at the appointed hour and lunches were easily prepared so that we got out on the water on time.  The boats are custom designed for fishing this area of Alaska and are comfortable to fish in any weather.  The fishing is as good as it gets in Alaska.

I can certainly recommend the lodge and fishing for any fishermen and their families.

“Heaven”

If there were a heaven, NorthernSpell would be my idea of what heaven would be like.   My 10 day visit there was nothing short of amazing.  Scott Peakes is the consummate host and his attention to the needs of his guest is unparalleled.  I have done a great deal of travel in my lifetime, but this trip is and will remain at the top of my list forever.  Wadleigh Island is one of the most serene and beautiful landscapes on this planet. NorthernSpell is truly a gorgeous place to be and stay.

The home is stunning, furnishings top notch, and the bedding is cozier than my own.  Orcas and dolphins were daily visitors to our little cove and the Eagles and other birds were constant guests.  I cannot say enough about the food.. my mouth waters just thinking about the barbequed oysters, fresh Dungeness crab, Salmon and Halibut, and the venison chili was literally to die for.  Fishing is generally not my thing, but after two short days (yes I was teased about my 9:00 am start times J) of fishing, I shipped home 150 pounds of fresh frozen Salmon and halibut, which I shared with friends and family for nearly a year after my return.

I look forward to returning to the Northern Spell soon and often.  Thank you, Scott, for making my first and only visit to Alaska, simply epic.

“A Nature Extravaganza”

We are typically drawn to tropical vacations, but wanted to try something different…Alaska and Salmon fishing. We chose NorthernSpell because I came across an article written by a young woman, on Wadleigh Island and the NorthernSpell, I had to give it a try.

After a plane ride to Ketchikan and my first experience on a float plane we arrived in Craig where we were picked up for a short boat ride to the island, we were greeted with Alaskan hospitality!  I was amazed at the accommodations; they were tastefully decorated with what I would call “modern yet rustic elegance” with all the amenities of what embodies Alaska’s charm. All the rooms were bright and cheery. We loved all the windows that allowed seeing and feeling all the Alaskan nature that surrounded us. The huge beautiful deck overlooking the water made for a great way to enjoy early morning coffee and afternoon gatherings where we would share our stories of the day.

At the NorthernSpell we enjoyed dining on everything from gourmet meals prepared by their chef and staff to requesting a BBQ of our freshly caught Salmon. One night we simply sat around a bonfire where we enjoyed a Crab boil, of crabs brought up from a crab pot that day…yummy! In the mornings, before going out fishing there were well thought out breakfast selections and lunch items laid out for us where we could grab and go!

During our stay we enjoyed fishing every day where we had the best fishing guide to this novice fisherwoman & fisherman where I pulled in the biggest fish for the day, what an adrenaline rush (32 lbs). . . We boated every fish! The boat rides during our fishing excursions yielded a welcome surprise. . . A nature extravaganza. . . Whales, seals, sea otters, fish jumping all around us, the most beautiful bald eagles I have seen my life. Speaking of eagles, they were everywhere! When they weren’t swooping down to get a fish from the water they were soaring majestically over my head, so close that I could hear the sound of their wings flapping. Additionally, we loved strolling and shopping in the surrounding small, quaint towns and nature hikes.

The NorthernSpell is truly a first class operation. . . I give it 5 stars! We enjoyed being pampered beyond our expectations! We were delighted with our experience and can’t wait to go back. As I am writing this I am reflecting on the many memories that has made the NorthernSpell a vacation destination for us, as we hone our fishing skills . . .”We’ll Be Back”!
